Preparing Culinary Larvae at home:
The first thing you’ll want to do when you get your larvae home is to place them in the fridge. This will slow down their metabolism and make it less likely they’ll pupate.
3+ hours prior to when you’d like to cook your larvae place them in the fridge to humanly dispatch them.
Once your ready to cook pour the larvae a wheat middlings into a wire-mesh strainer. Sift out the middlings by tapping the strainer against the palm of your hand. This is best done over a sink or trash can, I like to do it in my garden and let the siftings fertilize the soil. Pick out any larvae that perished prematurely, distinguishable by a much darker cuticle color.
Finally, rinse the larvae under cool water removing a lingering substrate. Spread them on a baking sheet or plate and pat dry.
Voila! Your larvae are clean and ready to be turned into a delicious meal!
